Improve Motivation

Problem-based tasks can motivate learners like never before...especially when they truly understand the steps they take toward a solution are preparing them for their work in the future.

Preparing our Kids for Their Future

We all have organized our classes into groups- whether it's assigned group work or student-chosen groups, perhaps we can put a twist on group work. Our learners can benefit greatly when the work they do in school better represents the complex problem-solving, adaptability and the methods needed to accomplish a goal or complete a task. Future jobs will require working collaboratively with others...in what is called a "Gig-Economy".
Why does this matters to educators? We are preparing our students for a future that might have them working with groups in different geographies, different time-zones and different cultures. Adaptability to new tools and new workflows are tools our learners can practice while they're with us, in their K-12 setting.
TechTarget describes a "gig-economy" as a free-market system where companies and organizations hire freelancers, part-time, project-based workers, independent contractors or temporary workers for short-term purposes. "Gig" simply comes from the music industry, a slang term meaning a job for a short period of time.

Micah Shippee has tweaked the way he groups his Social Studies students. This chart shows the class period, what task has been assigned, and specific guiding questions that create building blocks toward the final goal.
